Destiny 2
While I understand that the Destiny 2 community wanted to have a bit more kept under wraps, I’m not sure anyone took that to mean “we never want to have a seasonal roadmap again.” And yet, that’s what’s happened, and we’re now in a pretty weird situation where we have a live service game that does not produce a seasonal roadmap every season, something that hasn’t happened since last year at this point (err, 2021).
This is a different issue than Destiny 2 keeping its seasonal themes and story under wraps ahead of release, as the game is not even releasing a roadmap after the season comes out.
This is creating some weird situations, like one that’s come up this week. Without a roadmap, for instance, we do not have any indication when the second of two weeks of Iron Banner will be. Given that the mode requires an insane amount of grinding for gilding and a new shader, I have zero idea whether week 2 is going to be the one week I’m on vacation next month, or during the release week of some other huge game I have to play in February. So I feel pressured to do all the grinding now.
There was also some confusion based on past TWAB wording about whether Trials would actually happen this week despite being Iron Banner, something that could have been clarified by a roadmap. Then we have event start dates and runtimes, season end dates. Important info that we just have to guess at.
Destiny 2
Literally the only thing I ever saw players complain about with a roadmap was when it put the exotic Bastion on display when it ended up being a should-have-been-secret reward from the Corridors of Time’s elaborate puzzle quest. But I think there’s a really big range between revealing actual secrets and laying out a basic timeline of events, which was the main purpose of a roadmap in the past. Now we have…nothing.
I’m not sure why this happened. Part of it may be the secrecy thing, but I do wonder if another part was wanting to be less locked into rigid scheduling if they needed to change something on the fly. As in, they want to be flexible in terms of when to have the second Iron Banner week rather than locking it in three months ahead of time. Still, I think we’ve lost more than we’ve gained here, and I do miss roadmaps for trying to plan out my time with a season.
Will roadmaps ever return? I don’t see why they shouldn’t, as they were a staple of Destiny 2 as a live service for eons, and unlike most games, Bungie was actually very good about hitting the promised dates on everything in them. Hopefully in the year of Lightfall we’ll head back to having more information rather than less.
